Exiles Hit Form
Dubai Exiles continued on their winning ways in the weekend when it defeated one of its local rivals and the current Dubai Sevens Champions on Friday.
The iconic club backed up their giant slaying effort in defeating previously unbeaten Abu Dhabi a week ago this time putting the classy Dubai Dragons to the sword in a hard fought 22-15 win in the AGRFU Prosperity Gulf Premiership.
Things looked ominous for the forward dominated Exiles early when Dragon's playmaker Andy Russell skipped outside his marker to allow speedster Shane Thornton to waltz in for the easiest of tries. The eventual winners however were soon into their work and despite a heavy penalty count soon used their dominant set-pieces to launch attacking raids deep into the oppositions territory. Forward created tries to the in-form front row forwards of Dave Vittes and Mike Riley were added to with a nicely taken penalty from flyhalf Paul Beard.
The plucky Dragons to their credit and skill kept themselves in the match with points of their own and with five minute remaining the scores were locked 15-15. With pressure mounting on the smaller Dragons pack and their backline flair negated by some staunch Exiles defence a string of phases saw replacement Exiles scrumhalf Gareth Armstrong spot some space on the blindside where a finely executed cut-out pass saw try scoring whiz Jon Beeton gain the outside line to score just inside the corner flag. Beard duly slotted the sideline conversion and after a few nervous minutes of defence for Beard's team mates saw the final whistle blown on what was a fixating contest for the vocal supporters who watched the match.
